What Is SPRAVATO®?

SPRAVATO® is a prescription nasal spray derived from ketamine and approved by the FDA for use alongside an oral antidepressant.

Unlike traditional antidepressants that primarily affect serotonin, SPRAVATO® works on the brain’s glutamate system, which plays a key role in mood regulation and neural communication.

  • FDA-approved for treatment-resistant depression
  • Used in combination with oral antidepressants
  • Administered only in certified medical settings
  • Supervised by trained psychiatric providers

Think of it like rebooting a frozen computer. Rather than slowly correcting one function, SPRAVATO® helps reset disrupted neural pathways more rapidly.

  • Have treatment-resistant depression, meaning two or more antidepressants have not provided adequate relief
  • Experience severe depressive symptoms despite ongoing treatment
  • Have major depressive disorder with suicidal ideation (when clinically appropriate)
  • Are seeking an alternative to traditional medication adjustments

  • Ongoing Psychiatric Support

SPRAVATO® is always combined with oral antidepressant therapy and regular provider follow-ups. Symptoms, side effects, and response are closely monitored, and you will need a ride home after each appointment.

    SPRAVATO® is always combined with:

    • Oral antidepressant therapy
    • Regular provider check-ins
    • Symptom tracking and adjustments

After treatment, you may experience side effects like dissociation, dizziness, nausea, sedation, or increased blood pressure. These effects typically resolve on the same day, but you will need a ride home after each appointment.

SPRAVATO® FAQ

  • Is SPRAVATO® the same as ketamine therapy?

SPRAVATO® is a specific FDA-approved formulation of esketamine with strict safety guidelines. It is different from IV ketamine treatments.

  • How quickly does SPRAVATO® work?

SPRAVATO® is designed to act more quickly than standard antidepressants, but every patient is different. Some people report symptom relief within 24 hours to a few days, while others require multiple treatments over several weeks to experience meaningful improvement.

  • Do I need to stop my current antidepressant?

No. SPRAVATO® is used alongside an oral antidepressant as part of a combined treatment plan.

  • Can I drive myself home after SPRAVATO® treatment?

No. Due to temporary side effects, a ride home is required after every appointment to keep you safe.
